- The PTCE is in person only, at a Pearson VUE test center. There is no at-home option.
- Bring a valid, unexpired, government-issued ID with a photo and signature. The name must match your PTCB Account.
- Plan 2 hours: a 5-minute tutorial, the 110-minute exam and a 5-minute survey.
- A calculator is built into the exam. You can't bring your own.
- No scheduled breaks. You can take one, but the clock keeps running.
- You see an unofficial pass/fail on screen at the end. The official score report comes within 3 weeks.
Pack list
Tick things off as you pack. Your ticks stay on this device.
Bring
Leave behind
- Phone and all electronics (turned off, in a locker)
- Watch, wallet, bag and large jewelry
- Coats, jackets and non-religious hats (sweaters and other indoor layers are OK)
- Your own pens, pencils and calculator
- Notes and study guides. Studying isn't allowed in the test center
The rules that matter on the day
Your ID and name
- Pearson staff compare your ID with the name in your PTCB Account. It must match, with a few exceptions: a missing hyphen, initials instead of a first name, or names in reverse order are OK.
- A different last name (for example, after marriage) needs an original marriage certificate, divorce decree or other legal proof.
- An expired driver's license works only with an unexpired renewal receipt. Without acceptable ID you can't test and you lose all fees.

Check-in
- Staff may take a digital signature, a palm scan and your photo, and check your ID electronically.
- You pat yourself down and empty your pockets for the test administrator. Your things go in a locker.
- Items on Pearson VUE's comfort aid list are allowed after a quick visual check. They don't need approval ahead of time.
The calculator
- A calculator is built into the exam. A personal calculator can't be used under any circumstance.
- If you ask and your test center has a hand-held calculator, you may use it.

Breaks
- There are no scheduled breaks. You may take an unscheduled break, but the exam clock keeps running.
- On a break you may get essentials from your locker, such as medication or food. You can't leave the building.
How much time you get
| Part | Questions | Time | Per question |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exam | 90 | 110 min | ~75 sec |
The full appointment is 120 minutes, including the tutorial before the exam and the survey after it. Unscheduled breaks come out of the 110 minutes. [1][2][5]
Our tip: Do one pass through all questions. If a calculation is slow, make your best guess and come back to it at the end, since you can change answers until time runs out.
Where you take it
In person only (Pearson VUE test center)
- The PTCE is given at more than 1,400 Pearson test centers in the U.S. Online testing is offered for other PTCB exams, but not the PTCE.
- Most centers test Monday through Friday, and some on Saturday. Arrive early: ID or check-in problems can cost you the appointment.
- Try Pearson's practice tutorial to see the testing screen. It isn't PTCE-specific.
When you get your score
- Right after the survey
A preliminary pass/fail appears on screen. Some centers print it, but not all. It usually reflects how you did, but it isn't official. [1][9]
- Within 3 weeks
Your official score report posts to your PTCB Account within 3 weeks. If you pass, PTCB emails you how to claim your digital badge. Scores are scaled from 1,000 to 1,600; 1,400 passes. PTCB can't speed this up. [2][9][10]
- If you need a retake
Wait for the official score report, then apply and pay again. There's no wait for attempts 2 and 3. Attempt 4 needs a 6-month wait. [11]
If you're nervous
- Not every question counts: 10 are unscored, and you can't tell which ones. If a question seems strange, it may be one of them. Answer it and move on.
- Run through the Pearson tutorial once so the screen and buttons feel familiar.
- Plan your route and leave extra time. Late or missing-ID problems are the easiest ones to avoid.
- You can change answers until time runs out, so one hard question doesn't have to be final.
Check before exam day
- Your Pearson VUE appointment: date, time and test center address
- The name on your ID matches your PTCB Account (contact PTCB before test day if it doesn't)
- Need testing accommodations? Request them with your application
