Military time
1930 hours
Often said: “nineteen thirty”
- 7:30 p.m. is between 1:00 and 11:59 p.m., so add 12 to the hour: 7 + 12 = 19.
- Drop the colon and the p.m.: 1930.
The example (7:30 p.m.) is filled in. Change any number to convert.

How to convert military time by hand
- 1:00 to 11:59 a.m.: drop the colon and add a leading zero if needed. 6:30 a.m. = 0630.
- 12:00 to 12:59 a.m.: the hour becomes 00. 12:15 a.m. = 0015.
- 12:00 to 12:59 p.m.: the hour stays 12. 12:15 p.m. = 1215.
- 1:00 to 11:59 p.m.: add 12 to the hour. 7:15 p.m. = 1915.
To go back, subtract 12 from hours 13 to 23 and add p.m. Hours 00 to 11 are a.m., and 00 is the 12 a.m. hour.
Time between two military times: subtract hours and minutes separately, and borrow 60 minutes, not 100. If the end time is smaller, count up to 2400 first, then add the time after 0000. From 2130 to 0645 is 2 hr 30 min + 6 hr 45 min = 9 hr 15 min.
Frequently asked questions
- What time is 1700 in military time?
- 1700 is 5:00 p.m. Subtract 12 from any hour from 13 to 23 to get the p.m. hour: 17 − 12 = 5.
- What is midnight in military time?
- Midnight at the start of a day is 0000 (zero hundred). Some schedules write the midnight that ends a day as 2400, so 2400 on Monday is the same moment as 0000 on Tuesday.

- Noon is 1200 (twelve hundred). The 12 o'clock p.m. hour never changes: 12:45 p.m. is 1245, not 2445.
- How do you convert p.m. time to military time?

- Many people say the hour, then the minutes: 1930 is "nineteen thirty." On the hour, "hundred" is common: 0700 is often said "zero seven hundred."
- Is military time on the HESI A2?
- Yes. Elsevier's HESI A2 review covers converting between regular and military time, and nurses use 24-hour time on medication records to avoid a.m./p.m. mix-ups.
